The Virginia & Truckee is by far the most famous of all American short lines. In its heyday, as many as 45 trains per day arrived and departed Virginia City. U.S. presidents and dignitaries from the world over rode the ornate V&T trains. Completed in 1869, the V&T R.R. hauled millions of dollars in gold and silver ore from the mines of Virginia City. Today, 80 years after the last train left the Comstock, the old V&T is back in operation.
Come spend the day with us as we operate our charter photo passenger train pulled by steam locomotive No. 18, a Baldwin 2-8-2 built in 1914 for the McCloud River Railway. Early morning we board our train in Virginia City for the 16 mile deadhead down the mountain to the Eastgate Carson City Station. You are welcome to board at Eastgate too. Here No. 18 will take water and run around our train. We then start the long climb up the mountain to Virginia City spending the day making scenic and spectacular photo run-bys. We are planning on making around 15 photo stops and run-bys. Note: No. 18 is being repaired but is expected to be ready by October. If she is not then V&T No. 29 will be used. Upon arrival back in Virginia City workshop visit.

Board Amtrak's eastbound California Zephyr at Emeryville for the journey over Donner Pass in the High Sierra to Reno, Nevada. Train No. 6 is scheduled to depart Emeryville at 8:25am and arrive Reno at 3:37pm. Hotel check-in and relax and enjoy Reno for the evening.

Early morning transfer by highway from your downtown Reno hotel to Virginia City. Upon arrival in Virginia City board our charter train for the run down the mountain to the Eastgate Station which is a few miles from Carson City. Here the steam locomotive will take water and run-around our train. We then spend the rest of the day onboard our charter train making the steep climb up the mountain back to Virginia City. We plan on making about 15 photo run-bys between Eastgate and Virginia City. Upon arrival at Virginia City you are welcome to explore the workshops and yards of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. Then we return to your hotel in downtown Reno.

Board Amtrak's westbound California Zephyr for the journey back over Donner Pass. Train No. 5 is scheduled to depart Reno at 9:24am and arrive in Emeryville at 4:57pm.

With this one day option to ride our charter train you are welcome to board at Virginia City early morning on October 9 and ride the deadhead run down the mountain to the Eastgate Station or board the train at Eastgate for the oneway journey back up the mountain to Virginia City making about 15 photo run-bys. Upon arrival at Virginia City you are welcome to explore the workshops and yards of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad.
