This tour is for the railfan that wants to pack in all of the steam railroading action in Nevada, Colorado, and New Mexico in one trip and get the most bang for their dollar. Nothing quite like this has been offered in the past to the railfan and our staff here at Trains & Travel International are looking forward to making this happen. We welcome railfans from all around the world to come join us for this spectacular event. If you cannot join us for the full 19 day tour then we welcome the fan to pick and choose their favorite railroads and design their own options.

As most of you know, the Lobato Trestle just outside of Chama caught fire during the summer of 2010 and needs to be repaired before any trains can run over it. This trestle is now scheduled to be ready for train traffic by late Spring 2011. We will run our two day charter September 30-October 1 Chama to Antonito and return the next day with a freight train consist. Next on our list of steam charters is a two day event October 3-4 on the San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad up to La Veta Pass. On the first day we run Alamosa, Colorado to La Veta and on the second day we return to Alamosa. For the last two days of our Ultimate Western Steam Spectacular we charter special photo trains at the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado and the Georgetown Loop Railroad out of Silver Plume, Colorado. The Creede mining district and this rail line was built in 1883 and saw it's last train in 1985. The line was originally constructed to bring wealthy and famous to the resorts at what is now the 4UR Ranch at Wagon Wheel Gap. The discovery of Silver and other Minerals further up the valley necessitated the extension for the Railroad to the Creede mining district. Tracks were laid right up to the bottom of the mines in the canyon beyond the Creede Depot. Passenger trains served the Creede Branch from Alamosa also carrying the mail, as well as packages of the various Railway Express. All of these traditional services had ceased to exist by 1932, and freight trains continued to serve Creede (at Wasson) until 1985. After that date, service was cut back to South Fork serving the U.S. Forest Industries Sawmill. in 2001, the sawmills closed and freight service ceased west of Monte Vista, and currently idle freight cars are stored along this track. In 2000 the Denver & Rio Grande Historical Foundation purchased this 21.6 mile line of scenic mountain meadows, rivers and 1,000 foot cliffs. This area is well known for its scenic vistas, historic towns and mines, fishing, hunting and just a wonderful get-away-from-it-all place.Future plans provide for the return of steam power and a turn of the century look to all right-of-way improvements. Addition of a third rail will return the railroad back to its original configuration at the turn of the century of both Narrow Gauge and Standard Gauge, giving the public the only major railroad in the US with a three rail set-up.
