UNION PACIFIC REVERSES IT'S APPROVAL....During the 4th week of May UP contacted Amtrak management and informed them that they were reversing their approval to run our train Through the Feather River Canyon via Keddie because of operating problems and said we now must Run our train on the former SP Shasta Route.

HIGH LEVEL MEETINGS....The first three weeks of May has been very intense with our staff attending meeting after meeting with Amtrak in Portland and conference calls with Amtrak management and operating departments across the country, plus meetings with Union Pacific, BNSF, Central Oregon & Pacific and even some of the local railroads in and around Portland. We solve one problem and the next day another one lands in our lap. In fact we have had to hire a professional railroad negotiator full time to attend all of these meetings and help come up with solutions.

AMTRAK BUDGET....It is very hard working with Amtrak when they are on the verge of running out of operating money because the Bush Administration decided to cut off funding. Amtrak is short on crews, rolling stock, engines, money and time. If Amtrak must close down after the start of the new Fiscal year which starts on October 1, 2005 you are going to see a total collapse of the nationwide passenger system. Most all Amtrak employees are more concerned right now about their jobs and their futures a nd rightly so.

RUMORS....With so much going on behind closed doors in high level meetings we are amazed at the number of crazy rumors flying around out there regarding all of the July charters and the NRHS convention. We are now convinced that some railfans stay up all night dreaming up good rumors regarding our charters and then go on the internet and post it for all to read . We are receiving phone calls daily with people asking about these rumors that they have heard. Folks, we cannot report to you after each and every meeting, as many details and arrangements that we are working on must be kept a secret at this time.

PARKING OUR TRAIN....One of the biggest challenges we have faced is finding a place to park our train in Portland from July 4- 25. This train will be used for other charters on July 6, July 16-17 and July 23-24. During the first week of May Amtrak was ready to cancel all of these charter trains coming into or going out of Portland for lack of parking space. Portland Union Station is out of the question because there is now many private cars planning to come to Portland for the NRHS convention. These cars will get parked at Union Station. One local railroad told us they would be happy to park our train for $39,000 and we were all shocked. At such a high price to park a train this was serious enough to cause some real concern if all of this would even take place. We are pleased to tell you that we did find one small short line with tracks less than two miles from Union Station that has agreed to allow our train to be parked at a reasonable price. This is just one example of the challenges and problems that seem to face us almost daily.

CREW SHORTAGE....Amtrak and the freight railroads face an extreme crew shortage for the balance of 2005. Amtrak has no money to hire new crews. We had reported that some crews came forward and said they would help run our train and even work on their off days to get qualified to run on certain freight only lines. We had one crew from Oregon inform us they were on vacation for most of July and were willing to work during their vacation to help run our charter trains. Our hats are off to these Amtrak crews that are willing to go far beyond the call of duty. We thank you very much.

PROVIDING OUR OWN POWER....During the 2nd week of May Amtrak informed us that they were short on power and that we would have to supply our engines in order to run our charters. We have located a number of diesel engines that are acceptable for our needs. Besides using some historic engines we also must have a couple of engines that are equipment with the HEP (Head End Power) in order to run the trains electrical system such as lights and A/C. With Amtrak's power shortage this now will make it much easier to get the approval to use some of these classic historic diesels.

EXCITING ADDITIONS....With the about face decision from UP we have been working overtime making exciting additions to our excursion that we hope most of Our passengers will really enjoy. These include running our train to McCloud overt The McCloud Railroad and running several spectacular photo run-bys on the unique Signal Butte Switchback. Other additions include a McCloud workshop tour and photo Session, a McCloud steam pulled photo freight, and the McCloud Dinner Train. then on the Central Oregon & Pacific Railroad an overnight stay in the Oceanside town of Florence, Oregon. We are also working on some other additions which are still in the planning stages.

CHANGE OF ROUTING OF OUR TRAIN

We realize that many of our passengers were looking forward to riding our charter train up the Feather River Canyon and then over the former Western Pacific-Great Northern NCE Hiline to Klamath Falls. All of our staff was too, and we are all very disappointed, more than you know, as several of our onboard staff are retired from the Western Pacific and have worked the Feather River Canyon and Hiline for many years and wanted to have the honor of staffing this train over their former working divisions. We were all surprised and shocked when the Union Pacific changed their minds and pulled their original approval. We spent many hours and money arranging for an Amtrak crew to get qualified for this route and now all for nothing. Even our Amtrak crew met with management to try and change UP's decision. Omaha has not given us or Amtrak management any reason for this action at an emergency meeting set up by Amtrak right after this decision. All of this is beyond our control. We did receive several e mails and phone calls from very disappointed passengers, but the pleasant surprise was the many passengers that contacted us with positive feedback on the new routing and strong support and we thank you.

POSITIVE FEEDBACK AND COMMENTS FROM OUR PASSENGERS

Wow...you have done a fabulous job of saving this trip. Yes, we are disappointed but we are still very excited about the trip. I know that it will go great and everyone will have a great time. Your trip on the McCloud will be fantastic!

JJ

Congrats on the rebound of the trip......talk about sand sifting under your feet. Good job of staying on your toes! I'll look forward to returning to McCloud!

JW

I have a great deal of sympathy for all of your problems with the "Train to the Convention". Despite my disappointment at the loss of, first the routing via Bend and then the Inside Gateway, I am still looking forward to a beautiful ride. As a transportation professional, I know what you've been going through.

RR

Fantastic, I really love the idea of running the train over the McCloud in two sections including the swtichback and the side trip out on the Central Oregon & Pacific. Good job.

PR

Regardless of which route your train will take this is going to be alot of fun and very exciting for us.

BL

Over the years I have gone on many Trains Unlimited, Tours excursions and trips and it always amazes me how you guys come up with last minute spectacular revisions when the chips are down and the railroads throw a curve at you. Keep up the good work

MW

Our hats are off to the staff of Trains Unlimited, Tours......looks like another wonderful and exciting train journey awaits us via McCloud and Florence.

EW

Just want to say I appreciate all the things that Chris Skow and staff have done with the NRHS trip in July. Judging from what I have read, the trip has been an extremely difficult one to finalize, and from past experience on TUT trips, I know this trip will be a fantastic time!! Few people understand what it takes to plan and implement a RR excursion and all the trails and tribulations it brings. I just want to say a great thank you for all your hard work and I plan on future TUT trips. Again Kudo's to your staff!!

RT

To Chris Skow: I don't know how you do it on short notice, but thanks much for arranging the alternate trips and motive power after the UP and Amtrak cancelled out. Big "HIGH FIVES" to you for taking a bunch of lemons and making sweet lemonade. Now we' re just waiting for the full glasses to be served to the guests. Very much looking forward to July 2.

DB

I'm damn impressed by all the positive additions you've made to the itinerary since having the rug pulled out from under you. It'll be a fun trip thanks to you persistence against all odds. Were you a magician who pulled rabbits out of a tophat in another lifetime?

MB

The new tour program is fantastic and we are really looking forward to this great train adventure. Either route, the Inside Gateway or the Shasta Route, we are here to have fun and enjoy a great train ride, but we must admit all of your hard work to add new things to this tour is going to make it very exciting. The side trips on the Mc Cloud and CORP Railroads is the icing on the cake. See you onboard

RESPONSE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL RAILWAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

In response to questions regarding the rerouting of the inbound special to the 2005 NRHS Convention, Greg Molloy, President of the National Railway Historical Society, recently posted the following message. This letter is reproduced with permission.

THIS IS NOT AN OFFICIAL NRHS STATEMENT. The opinions expressed here are my own.

The inbound special from Emeryville to Portland will be operated by Trains Unlimited Tours (TUT). The TUT train is operating with the approval of the NRHS convention, will provide some limited income to the convention, and will bring in cars for use on one convention train. The inbound special, however, is primarily a TUT operation. TUT is responsible for the marketing and operating arrangements and also assumes the financial risk. Tickets are sold separately from the convention events. Many people riding the train are not registered to attend the convention, and many people attending the convention are not planning to ride the inbound special.

First and foremost, I have no reason to believe that Trains Unlimited Tours did not sincerely and reasonably believe that they would be able to operate via Keddie wye. TUT had what they believed to be written approval of the route from the railroads involved. They had to announce and advertise the trip before signing binding contracts with the carriers involved. In that, they were no different from almost any other rail tour operator or sponsor operating in the USA during the last decade. Anyone who waited for all the final approvals to be granted and the paperwork to be signed before selling space would have gone out of business years ago.

Second, I need to point out that when UP withdrew their permission to operate via Keddie, TUT did not simply fall back to their minimum legal backup position. They would have fulfilled their stated obligations if they had simply run the Starlight route, provided three box lunches and included two nights hotel accommodations for those who purchased them. Instead, they have been working hard to include extras to make up for the lost freight-only mileage. Granted, some people may already have the McCloud and the CO&P. But if TUT were only interested in getting your money, they wouldn't have invested the time and effort it took to arrange those alternates. For much less effort, they could have simply given us four or six extra hours per day to watch TV in our layover motel rooms.

It also doesn't surprise me that TUT is sticking with their published refund policy. Running charter passenger trains, in either North or South America, is a very uncertain business. For almost all of the railroads involved, it is a sideline well removed from their core business. Numerous things can, and occasionally do, go wrong. A tour operator has to make heavy financial commitments up front. Neither TUT nor any other tour operator can afford to let customers walk away from their own financial commitment to the tour whenever anything changes.

In short, I commend Trains Unlimited Tours for undertaking a very ambitious project under adverse conditions. I also commend them for developing a good backup package when the original plans didn't work out. As a mileage collector, I will miss the Inside Gateway, but I will appreciate adding some other lines I don't have. As a photographer and a train traveler, I'm looking forward to a very enjoyable trip.

Greg Molloy
President, NRHS

HISTORIC POWER....We are currently working and making arrangements to use a number of historic and colorful diesels and even steam during our journey north to Portland. We are pleased to report the F 9A has now been repainted in full Southern Pacific Black Widow in a workshop in Washington and the California State Railroad Museum has given approval to use their classic SP Daylight E 8A. on our first leg of our journey between Emeryville and Sacramento. Other arrangements and approvals are still pending. See below for photos of some of these historic engines that we are planning on using.

HISTORIC MOTIVE POWER PLANNED AND PENDING

JULY 2 EMERYVILLE TO Mc CLOUD: On our first day we run Emeryville to Sacramento on the former Southern Pacific mainline. We will pick up passengers in Emeryville, Martinez, and Sacramento. Upon departing Sacramento we will swing onto the former Western Pacific mainline and head northeast to Binny Junction which is near Marysville. At this point our charter train will swing onto the former SP Shasta Route and head north up the Sacramento Valley to Redding. Departing Redding we start the climb into the Cascade Mountains crossing over Shasta Lake on the Pit River Bridge and following the shores of the lake before again crossing over Shasta on the Sacramento River Bridge and entering the Sacramento River Canyon with a 1.2 percent grade to Dunsmuir. From here the grade increases to 2.1 percent as the rails climb out of the Sacramento River Canyon by way of the horseshoe Cantara Loop. This loop crosses over the Sacramento River for the 18th time since leaving Redding and is famous as one of the tightest curves on the former SP system. From Cantara the line twists and climbs up the face of the canyon before reaching the rim. As we make our way up this rugged canyon towards Dunsmuir and the rim above Cantara Loop you will see that this area has many geographic wonders including the Castle Crag Peaks, Mount Shasta at 14, 161 feet, Black Butte, Cantara Loop, Lake Shasta , and numerous bridges and tunnels.

Upon arrival in Mt. Shasta we are greeted by two Mc Cloud Railroad SD 38 diesels and two crews. Our Amtrak crew will detrain here and the Mc Cloud crews will take over. First our train is split into two sections of 8 cars each and the First Section departs flying "Green Flags" with the Second Section running 15 minutes behind. When was the last time you heard of a passenger train flying green flags? At the Signal Butte Switchback both sections will unload passengers for a photo run-by. Once both sections are out of the way steam locomotive No. 18, 2-8-2 Baldwin built in 1914 will arrive from Mc Cloud with a special photo freight. Once the run-bys are completed passengers will load up and we continue down the mountain in two sections to Mc Cloud. Both sections will unload at the diesel workshops and the crews will line-up all of the motive power for a unique and once in a lifetime photo shoot that will include 8 colorful engines. Also No. 18 with her photo freight will be making some more photo run-bys in the workshop and yard area for those passengers that are interested. Meanwhile Mc Cloud's "Shasta Sunset Dinner Train" will be ready to depart for the three hour dinner run to Mt. Shasta and return. Passengers will have several options to choose from. For a brief moment in the late afternoon of July 2 there will be four trains in Mc Cloud. This will never happen again! Passengers will have three options once we arrive in Mc Cloud.

OPTION 1: Shasta Sunset Dinner Train (Extra fare) Special group rate of $79 per person including gratuity. Order from Trains Unlimited, Tours.

ENTREE CHOICES:
*BLACK BUTTE BEEF WELLINGTON
*CHICKEN MARSALA
*GRILLED SWORDFISH

OPTION 2: Workshop visit, motive power photo shoot, and No. 18 photo freight run-bys
OPTION 3: Upon arrival in Mc Cloud depart by charter motorcoach for the short ride to Mt. Shasta and hotel-motel check-in.

SPECTACULAR VIEWS AND RUGGED RAILROADING IN THE OREGON CASCADES

Upon arrival in Eugene our train will be turned over to the Central Oregon & Pacific Railroad for the 61 mile run west out on the remote Coos Bay Line. Our Amtrak crew will continue to be in charge of our train under the guidance of a CO&P pilot crew. Once we depart Eugene on the former Southern Pacific 138 mile Coos Bay Branch, we enter "Dark Territory" under the control of track warrants. This line was built in the early 1900's and runs over many trestles including several classic drawbridge-swingbridges plus 9 tunnels, the longest being 4184 feet. Many miles of this line are inaccessible and remote. Once we leave the Willamette Valley we enter the Siuslaw National Forest and the rugged costal range as the tracks climb up Badger Mountain on a steep reverse loop near Vaughn and into the first tunnel. After coming out of this tunnel we enter the remote Wildcat Creek Canyon. This is indeed very rare mileage. After staging a photo run-by in this area we continue westbound towards the Pacific Ocean following the Siuslaw River. At the station of Tide, 51 rail miles out of Eugene and still a good 20 miles from the ocean you will notice that the river is now on the tide currents of the Pacific. Soon we arrive at the station of Beck which is a few miles east of Florence. Here we will transfer to waiting motorcoaches for the short ride to your hotel in Florance. Just west of Beck the line the rail line turns south and crosses over the Siuslaw River on a long drawbridge. Our arrival at Beck will be around 9:30PM but during this time of year the sun will be dropping into the Pacific Ocean right about at this time, so it will still be quite light.
