Enjoy a relaxed vacation on one of the most fascinating islands in Indonesia: Java! Travel in the President's luxury coach over the cape-gauge rail network of Java and enjoy luxury hotels, the best sightseeing, regular diesel locomotives of the Indonesian Railways, charter steam trains and regular steam workings at the local sugar mills!
Java is so unique… a world on its own! Where else would you find such a fascinating and exotically different holiday destination so colorful and enjoyable? As the world's most populous island, Java has a wealth of wondrous attractions few have ever seen. We will traverse the island in the president's private rail cars specially chartered for our tour group and attached to day-light passenger/express trains. This includes three rail cars. The luxury president's car and first class Eksekutif car are fully air conditioned and the third car is a regular coach with windows that open for photos. Our group will have access to all three cars. On board, lunch and refreshments are served to you at your seat as you enjoy the spectacular ever-changing panorama at your window, much of which could never be seen by ordinary road travel. The Indonesian Railway system on Java has a very interesting operation of express and local passenger trains pulled by a wide variety of diesel engines from: EMD, GE, SLM, CFD, GELI, Krupp, Henschel and Krauss Maffei. If you like a lot of bridges and trestles then you will love the island of Java.
Each night is fully accommodated in first class hotels with a sumptuous breakfast included each morning. Most other meals including some special feature meals with Indonesian culinary delights are all inclusive. Our special built-in side tours will show you how the local inhabitants live, work and practice their unique culture.

We see the National Monument, Chinatown and the Jalan Surabaya flea market. A special highlight is the Sunda Kelapa harbor, home of the tall masted Bugis schooners - the largest fleet of commercial sailing ships in the world today. This evening we enjoy a special welcome dinner at a local restaurant. 2nd night at the Sari Pan Pacific Hotel.
DAY 3 TUESDAY AUGUST 9: (B-D) After breakfast we check out from our hotel and transfer to the nearby Gambir railway station in readiness to board the express train to Bandung. Leaving bustling Jakarta behind our train soon reaches the more tranquil highlands. Spectacular breathtaking scenery abounds as the train passes over huge bridges and viaducts constructed more than 100 years ago by the Dutch. On arrival in Bandung we check in to the delightful 4 star Savory Homann Hotel which is a colonial era hotel. Later transfer to one of the cities big shopping malls with free time for shopping. ![]()
DAY 4 WEDNESDAY AUGUST 10: (B-L) After breakfast we transfer to the Bandung Railway Station to board our special private rail car attached to the morning express train to Yogyakarta. Today's journey takes us through fascinating rural countryside passing terraced paddy fields, plantations and villages. Lunch is served on board by our catering crew as you enjoy the superb scenery. Mid afternoon we arrive in Yogyakarta, one of the foremost cultural centers and former capital of the ancient Javanese Kingdom, where we are transferred to the 5 star Milia Purosani Hotel.
DAY 5 THURSDAY AUGUST 11: (B-L) Our sightseeing tour today takes us to one of the great wonders of the world - the mighty Borobudur Buddhist Temple. There is ample time to explore and photograph this ancient temple built in the 8th century, before we have lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch we continue our journey north to Ambarawa to see the railway museum. Here we board our chartered vintage train hauled by a 108 year old steam rack locomotive for the spectacular climb to Bedono. Our waiting bus returns us to the Milia Purosani Hotel after an unforgettable day's excursion.
DAY 6 FRIDAY AUGUST 12: (B-D) We motor to near-by Solo and board a chartered train, hauled by the 115-year old steam locomotive C12-18 (built 1895 by Hartmann in Saxony, Germany) on a part of one of the few remaining branch lines in Indonesia (former Solo-Wonogiri line). In the afternoon we will present you the fascinating town of Yogyakarta on a sightseeing tour. Lateron you will use a typical Indonesian means of transport (no, not the donkey) to get to your local restaurant for dinner by "Becak", a tri-cycle taxi. Overnight again at the Melia Purosani Hotel. ![]() ![]() DAY 7 SATURDAY AUGUST 13: (B-D) Today our private luxury rail car will be attached to the morning passenger train to Madiun. Close to Madiun we will visit three sugar mills that do not only use steam locomotives for shunting, but also allow us to glimpse inside the mill's factory buildings to see the huge stationary steam machines, some more than 100 years old - and still going strong! We plan to call at these sugar mills: Kanigoro, Pagottan, and Merican. Kanigoro sees normally only 1 blue livered working steam locomotive but as the scene with shunting taking place under mighty old trees´ canopy of leaves is so photographic, we should not miss that. At Pagottan steam locomotive fans will surely enjoy one of the world's last working inside frame Luttermoeller drive locomotives. Merican offers steam locomotive use, too: you will either see the world's only 0-4-2 in daily revenue service, or, if operational, the last working Mallet rostered for that duty. We motor to Cepu later this afternoon and stay at the Forestry Department's guesthouse tonight. The guesthouse offers a basic and clean accommodation.
![]() DAY 8 SUNDAY AUGUST 14: (B-D) We have chartered a mixed freight train on the cape gauge logging railway at Cepu. Hauled by probably one of the huge 0-10-0 tank locomotives built by Schwartzkopff in Germany. We shall have an extensive photographic session at the line's log yard and will proceed to the remote teak plantations. Upon return to Cepu we head back to Madiun, board our private rail car and move on to Surabaya. Due to the limited number of stopping trains between Madiun and Surabaya we will arrive at the East-Javanese city late this evening. Overnight at the 4 star Surabaya Plaza Hotel. ![]() DAY 9 MONDAY AUGUST 15: (B-D) This is a day to relax and enjoy life: after a late breakfast we show you the highlights of Surabaya: bustling Chinatown, the colorful Kalimas harbor, or the famous "Food Street". For the rest of the day you are free to shop in one of the luxurious Mega-Malls, photograph the tiny diesel shunters at the town's railway station, or just put your feet up at the hotel's pool. 2nd night at the Surabaya Plaza Hotel.
DAY 10 TUESDAY AUGUST 16: (B-D) Today you will visit one of the world's most spectacular natural wonders: the line up of volcanoes around Mt. Bromo! You will be offered two travel options: the first one allows you to catch the bus to Mt. Bromo for sun-rise photography. It is a truly a fascinating experience to stand at the vantage view point and watch the array of volcanoes in front of you slowly raising out of the morning mist! The second option allows you to have a regular breakfast at the hotel and join the early-birds at the volcanoes later. We will not visit Mt. Bromo if the volcanoes activity is still high and will offer you an alternative option. On our way back to the hotel we will stop at some small rural villages where you can enjoy the colorful local life. Again, we spend the night at the Surabaya Plaza Hotel.
DAY 11 WEDNESDAY AUGUST 17: (B-D) Our private rail car will be attached to the express train from Surabaya to Pekalongan today. After our arrival at the coastal town of Pekalongan we motor to the sugar mill at Sumberharjo. Sumberharjo hosts one of the rare fleets of active steam locomotives that are sent out to the sugar cane fields every day during the cane harvest between June and September. But trains do not run according to a fixed schedule and sometimes no wheels move for the entire day when locomotives wait in the fields with nothing to do. Thus we have chartered a steam hauled sugar cane train here! Overnight at the 3 star Gren Mandarin Hotel in Pekalongan.
DAY 12 THURSDAY AUGUST 18: (B-D) At Sumberharjo, where we return today, every morning about 5 steam locomotives will be prepared for the upcoming duties, normally 3-4 locos are used to haul trains to the fields every day. All steam locomotives are being serviced in front of the shed, offering superb photographic opportunities! Later the steam locos take the empties to the sugar cane fields. After having photographed them, we continue to our next stop: the sugar mill at Sragi. Sragi is famous for it large numbers of steam locomotives in daily service, expect 6-8 engines in steam every day! Sragi is also reknowned for its double-headers and the really hard workings in the loading yard. If you do not like that much steam, you can enjoy the coastal and beach life during the day or explore the local villages with your guide(s). Indonesian people are incredibly friendly and your smile will be replied in every way! 2nd night at the Gren Mandarin Hotel in Pekalongan.
DAY 13 FRIDAY AUGUST 19: (B-D) While driving to Cirebon, we will stop at our last sugar mill during this exciting trip: the mill at Pangkah hosts some of the classic 2-6-0 steam locomotives built by Jung in Germany and also allows a visit to the stationary steam machines! Your private rail car has traveled from Pekalongan to Cirebon in the meantime and awaits you for the last stretch of your journey through Java. Attached to the express train to Jakarta, you will arrive at the Gambir railway station in the late afternoon. An "Indonesia-Farewell"-dinner will conclude the day with outstanding Indonesian hospitality. Overnight Sari Pan Pacific Hotel.
DAY 14 SATURDAY AUGUST 20: (B) Visit the interesting National Transport Museum with a large number of exhibits after breakfast. The rest of the day is at leisure: relax at the hotel's pool, do some last-minute shopping or conquer the city on your own - but please do not forget that it is time to fly home today... Hotel rooms are booked and available for you until tonight.
