Discover the cape gauge railway operations on Java with its colonial infrastructure of tunnels, semaphore signals, and girder bridges. The state owned railway company still uses 40+ years old diesel locomotives from GE, Henschel and Krupp. Even an 1953 built ALCO is operational! We will also visit the electrified suburban train-services at Jakarta, using second hand Japanese railcars, and have a look a various depots and the major repairshop at Yogyakarta! All embedded in lush green hills, rice fields, palm- and banana-trees, pittoresque villages with volcanoes in the background. And, in total contrast to this: the megacity Jakarta...
Day 1 Saturday June 23: (D) Arrival at Surabaya in the morning, transfer to the diesel shed and yard at Sidotopo. Due to a shortage of space, the railway piles up all wreckages above eachother... and from long forgotten and "renatured" diesel locomotives to the perfectly polished, shiny GE-locomotive you will find all forms of locomotive life cycles. Later on we move to Pasar Turi, one of three major stations in Surabaya with a lot of regular action with locomotives from all major three suppliers (GE, Henschel, Krupp)!Accommodation at the Hotel Sahid. Day 2 Sunday June 24: (B-D) Early morning departure by bus to Malang, about 80 kms/50 mls south of Surabaya. A BB301 or BB301 diesel waits for us already and we will run a charter train from here, starting with the classic semaphore signals at Malang station. We then run north and have scheduled a lot of runpasts on the way towards Surabaya. After our arrival we move to the Jagir overflow spillway with its impressive building in the background and take photographs of the regular, mostly GE hauled passenger trains. Accommodation at Surabaya. Day 3 Monday June 25: (B-D)) We will visit the Kota station this morning. Shunting is still in the hands of 60 year old diesel locomotives (class D301), built by Krupp in Germany. Most shunts have to pass a major and busy road just in front of the station with a photogenic signal tower and lots of local action on the street. We then motor to one of the main lines leaving town to the west/south and spend the rest of the day linesiding regular trains. Later in the evening we board express train KA35 in first class and travel up to Semarang where we are scheduled to arrive around 23:00. Overnight at the Santika Premier Hotel Day 4 Tuesday June 26: (B-D) We want to catch the sunrise this morning at the only place on Java where the railway line passes the shores of the ocean - an early departure to the small village of Plabuan is needed for that! Opposite the railway station of Plabuan several small shops offer refreshments during the day but the the entire area is so remote that we will have to hire local motorbike-taxis to move on to the next village because no paved through road exists. You will enjoy classic main line diesel action along the coast line and small fishermens´ villages. Accommodation at Semarang. Day 5 Wednesday June 27: (B-D) We return to Plabuan for another action-filled morning here. Beside the GE-hauled passenger trains, about half a dozen freight trains (mostly containers) pass this section, local traffic is handled by DMUs. Over lunchtime we motor to Ambawara, starting point of the only steam operated rack-railway in Java. We have chartered a steam hauled train here for the climb up to Bedono. Accommodation at the Sandika Premiere Hotel Yogyakarta. Day 6 Thursday June 28: (B-D) Yogyakarta offers two main stations, an intense schedule for GE-hauled freight, express, and regional trains, plus an astonishing number of colourful diesel railcars. Lots of action guaranteed this morning. After lunch we will visit the big diesel locomotive repairshop of the national railways: in 2011 we were the first group of railfans to be allowed into the shop and received a very warm welcome by the shop´s management that put no restrictions on photography there. At least two derelict ALCOs from 1953 could be spotted in the scrap line in the open area outside the shop. About 30 defunct diesel locomotives join them waiting here for their final journey.. Accommodation at Yogyakarta. Day 7 Friday June 29: (B-D) Traveling westward today, we basically follow the main line to Purwokarto, and will stay in close contact with the local dispatchers all the time to be ready for the next train to come. Nearly all trains that we have seen yesterday (and some more) will pass this section, too! You will enjoy a lot of local, mostly rural Indonesian countrysite shots.Accommodation at the Wisata Niga Hotel Purwokarto. Day 8 Saturday June 30: (B-D) We start our day by visiting the small station of Kroya and will photograph the activities along the main line (Jakarta-Surabaya) this morning. This is again a busy section with a lot of oil-tanker freight trains, dominantly hauled by elderly GE-locomotives. Around lunchtime we depart with one of Indonesia´s finest preserved diesel locomotives: CC20015 was built by the ALCO works in 1953, and has been beautifully restored after being pulled out of regular service in the 1980s. We take this marvelous engine back on the line and run a charter train via Purwokerto and Bumiayu to Margasari. Between Kroya and Purwokerto we will enjoy single track and a lot of stunning photo locations at tunnels, lakes, and bridges. North of Purwokerto the track has been doubled recently or is just in the process of being extended, we will pass many viaducts and large girder bridges, the line tackles the hills with countless twists and turns, passing partly active volcanoes like the 3.428 mtrs/11.250 ft high Mt. Slamet. A lot of regular trains need a helper engine here. Accommodation at Purwokerto. Day 9 Sunday July 1: (B-D) The next days reflect the full colonial heritage of Java: when the railway lines around Bandung were built by the Dutch, the colonial engineers chose a routing with fairly moderate grades and built the railway with lots of curves and bridges to avoid tunnels or rack-sections. Some of the most beautiful spots for railway photography can be found here - and we will take you to those locations! Today we will visit the Ciamis and Cihereng bridges, the latter one being so remote that we have to use motorbike-taxis again to get to the bridge. Accommodation at the Santika Hotel Tasikmalaya. Day 10 Monday July 2: (B-D) We return to the famous Cihereng bridge this morning, stop at the Cimanuk bridge afterwards and spend the afternoon between the bridge and Cibatu station: a small village, rice terrace fields, banana- and palm-trees, and of course semaphore signals offer a huge variety of settings for your photo- or videography. The small but busy station of Cibatu is a typical example of the Dutch railway architecture of the colonial times and can be best photographed in the late afternoon. Even the cut off front of a steam locomotive can be found here at the former shed. Accommodation at the Sumber Alut Hotel Garut. Day 11 Tuesday July 3: (B-D) The small station of Lebak Jero is surely one of the most photogenic stations in Indonesia: nestled in between the hills, tightly attached to one of the many curves of the railway line with two volcanoes in the background, and equipped with semaphore signals throughout, it could become a railfan´s pilgrimage destination. There are two dedicated train sessions for Lebak Jero station: the first one covers the morning trains from 06:00 to 09:00, then there is a gap which we will use to return to our luxurious hotel and enjoy a swim in the pool´s hot volcanic water before we head back to the afternoon session that starts at 13:00! Accommodation at Garut. Day 12 Wednesday July 4: (B-D) Only "problem" at Lebak Jero: trains seldom run on time and thus you can´t photograph all trains in only one day because delays make it impossible to change from one site of the station to the other quickly enough to cover all train movements. We therefore spend another day with the diesel trains in paradise! Accommodation at Garut. Day 13 Thursday July 5: (B-D) The railway line between Sasaksaat and Cilame offers numerous spectacular bridges, a tunnel, and lots of rural life. We will spend the entire day here and will walk along the track to get from one photo location to the next. In the evening we motor to Jakarta.Accommodation at the Ibis Tamarin Hotel. Day 14 Friday July 6: (B-D) We start our day with a short ride onboard one of Jakarta´s many former Japanese railcars to Manggerai station: here nearly all lines of commuter and long distance passenger trains pass the station. The electrified line to Bogor with its frequent 100%+ load factor and passengers traveling on the roof of the EMUs also stops at Manggerai. After the morning rush hour we will visit the nearby repairshop where the only preserved example of the Dutch electric locomotives (#301) can be photographed. Around lunch time we will visit the 132 mtrs/433 ft high Monas-tower. From its visitor platform on top of the tower you have a splendid view not only of the megacity but also of the elevated railway line below. We then move on to the terminal station at Kota: it is busy with commuter and express trains, lots of GE and Henschel diesel locomotives can be found here! Accommodation at Jakarta.
Day 15 Saturday July 7: (B) Visits of two interesting diesel depots are scheduled for today´s morning: we start taking pictures at Jatinegara: a large depot serving exclusively General Electric. Lots of action, a turntable, and a steady movement of diesel locomotives will keep you busy! We change to the small depot of Tanah Abang, that still maintains the ageing fleet of Henschel and Krupp locomotives. We return to our hotel around lunchtime and transfer to the airport in the afternoon for our flights home.
