Each country can be booked separately, or you can join the full five country tour. Flights are not included, if you include Kenya and Zimbabwe the flights from Nairobi to Victoria Falls (via Harare or Johannesburg) should be booked with your long haul flights. All hotels will be of a good standard, and all road transport and transfers will be with registered and insured tour operators.
Prices will be posted soon.
DAY 1 WEDNESDAY MAY 18: Arrive in Nairobi today. Transfer from the airport to the Boulevard Hotel. Day at leisure or afternoon tour of the railway points of interest at extra cost. DAY 2 THURSDAY MAY 19: (B, L) Travel early this morning by road to Naivasha to join a charter steam train to Nairobi behind Tribal Class 2-8-4 number 3020 'Nyaturu'. Arrival in Naivasha is planned to be in time for a station runpast while the sun is still reasonably low. We have a leisurely schedule with 3 hours to cover the journey to Kijabe, normally scheduled to take 1 hour. There will be time for runpasts at places of our choice heading into the morning sunshine (weather permitting). Our mixed train will include a dining car with bar, and will simulate a modest East African mixed train with 4 wagons, 2 coaches and a brake van. To look photogenic so far as possible, we will make every effort to have the vehicles dating from the steam era and with coaches still in classic EAR style reddish-brown and cream livery. Lunch will be on the train during a servicing break, followed by a run out of the Rift Valley. Tourist option: Drive this morning to the Hell's Gate National Park and continue to the Elsamere Conservation Centresituated on the shores of Lake Naivasha and the home of the late Joy Adamson. Enjoy an included lunch after which there will be time to visit the attractions, including crescent island (extra cost, paid locally).
DAY 3 FRIDAY MAY 20: (B, L) Garratt 5918 will perform today with a run from Nairobi to Konza. Transfer by coach to Nairobi station to join an extended tour train with about 10 wagons plus coaches making a reasonable sized train for Class 59 Garratt 5918 'Mount Gelai'. Number 5918 will run bunker first to Konza since the better photographic opportunities are on the return journey. During a leisurely “bush lunch”, some entertainment will be provided by shunting, since the train must be reassembled in reverse formation for the return. If possible, our train will be arranged as a mixed with passenger coaches at the rear. The afternoon run back to Nairobi is timed to arrive around sunset.
Tourist option: The Daphine Sheldrick Trust , the market and Kazuri Beads. Today's tour will make a leisurely tour of some of Nairobi's attractions. Visit the Giraffe Centre, where you can feed the tallest animal (entry fee of Kes 700 payable direct.) Continue to Daphne Sheldrick's elephant sanctuary (minimum donation Kes 300, payable direct.) Stop at Kazuri beads before continuing to the Carnivore Restaurant for an included lunch. This afternoon, visit the Masai Market at Village market for some craft shopping before returning to the hotel.
![]() DAY 4 SATURDAY MAY 21: (B, L) The second day with Class 59 Garratt number 5918 'Mount Gelai'. The day starts with a transfer by coach to Nairobi station just before dawn. Our train will give the best possible impression of a freight, conveying one passenger coach only and be formed without the otherwise unavoidable tank wagons for loco water. Initially, 5918 and its train will be marshalled ready to make use of the opportunity of a sunrise backlight “glint” shot. Fortunately, Nairobi station is well supplied with attractive semaphore signals that add to the traditional railway atmosphere. Once we are satisfied with back-lit shots, 5918 will run round and we will make a short run to Makadara (5.1km) heading into the morning sun to give additional “lineside” photo chances. Participants have time at leisure in the Railway Museum with an included lunch win the Museum’s historic twin-diner set 4800/4901. 5918 will join us to take part in a short ceremony to celebrate the life of Kirpal Singh, who sadly passed away in 2010. He was 5918’s regular driver through the 1960s and 1970s, maintained 5918 in a tip-top condition and became a railway legend in his lifetime. In the afternoon, 2409 will arrive from the Workshops. Activity will recommence with a photo-shoot of 2409 and 5918 side-by-side, after which 5918 will retire to the Workshops. The excursion to Makadara and back will be repeated with 2409 and the same tour train rake. After this, the tour in Kenya will finish with further posed photography and mock shunting in Nairobi station yard until about 18:00.
Tourist option: A visit to Sweetwaters Tented Camp in Nanyuki. Depart at 07h00 on a 3 hours drive to Sweetwaters. Enjoy a game drive before an included lunch. Return to Nairobi this afternoon.
