THE HIGHLIGHT OF THIS YEARS EVENT WILL BE THE USE OF THE RAILROADS
NEWLY REFURBISHED “HISTORIC TRAIN” PULLED BY RIO GRANDE 168 A 4-6-0
BALDWIN 1883 ON THE 2ND DAY OUT OF ANTONITO. PHOTO BY DON ATKINSON
This is our 11th railfan excursion on the 3-foot gauge Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad running in the Rockies of New Mexico and Colorado. This line was once part of the Rio Grande's vast narrow gauge empire. 64 spectacular miles between Chama, New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado are now operated for tourist and railfans. Our private charter train will travel into the high country of the San Juan range to Cumbres Pass, at 10,015 feet through the rugged Toltec Gorge, on steep 4% grades, including high bridges, tunnels and many loops. Each day we will have a different steam locomotive . Our special charter trains will have various authentic Rio Grande freight and passenger cars. Everything including the steam locomotive will be lettered for the "Rio Grande". On the 2nd day out of Antonito we will have the railroad’s newly refurbished and painted “Historic Passenger Train” being pulled by Rio Grande 168.
DAY 1 THURSDAY, OCTOBER 7: (L)
Our special charter departs the Chama, New Mexico depot at 7:30am and runs to Antonito, Colorado with plenty of photo run-bys at remote locations. At some point along the line the regular passenger train will run-around us plus we will meet the Antonito train also. The consist will be a K-36 2-8-2 steam locomotive lettered Rio Grande, several freight cars lettered Rio Grande, a caboose and two passenger coaches at the rear. (Note: Because of our train weight there is a very good chance that the railroad will add a helper locomotive to make it a doubleheader Chama up the steep grade to Cumbres Summit).
DAY 2 FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8: (L)
We depart Antonito at 7:15AM ahead of the regular train and at some point along the line this train will run-around us. At Osier we will turn our train around on the balloon track for the return trip to Antonito. Plenty of photo run-bys all day. Today’s consist will be three cars of the newly refurbished and painted “Historic Passenger Train” being pulled by DRG 168, a 4-6-0 Baldwin built in 1883.
