Rail Adventures In The Andes

 

This trip combines many scenic and breathtaking railway journeys in Chile, Peru, and Bolivia. The tour program is all about trains, mining sites, and industrial history. We do traditional sightseeing when there is time between two train journeys. Our expedition starts in Tacna, the southernmost Peruvian City, and brings you to remote Andean regions of northern Chile, Bolivia, and Peru. We end the trip Lima, where we travel on the famous Lima – Huancayo – Lima train, which reaches the second highest railway station in the World at 15,681 ft) above sea level.

Day 1 Thursday June 11:

You arrive on your flight at Tacna, in southern Peru. Transfer to your Hotel check in and relax for the rest of the day and evrning.

 

Day 2 Friday June 12: (B-L)

In the morning, we visit the railway museum in Tacna. You have time to have lunch before we board the train to Arica in northern Chile. In Arica, transfer from the railway station to our Hotel in the city.

Day 3 Saturday June 13: (B-L)

We travel by train from Arica to Paconchile on the Arica – La Paz Railroad. We continue to Oruro, Bolivia from Paconchile in a private van crossing the spectacular pass of “Tambo Quemado.” We spend the night at our hotel in Oruro.

 

Day 4 Sunday June 14: (B-L)

We visit Bolivia’s largest Railway Museum in Machacamarca, about 20 miles south of Oruro. From Machacamarca, we follow the old private mining railroad to Uncia in our vehicle. We then return to Oruro to spend the night.

 

Day 5 Monday June 15: (B-L)

We visit the San Jose Mine and the Mining Museum in Oruro. Then we make a trip on the Urban Train “Qamqi” from Oruro’s central station to San Pedro in the Outskirts of town.  After lunch, we use the cable car up to the Socavon Virgin.  We stay overnight in Oruro.

 

Day 6 Tuesday June 16: (B-L)

You have free time in the morning. We have lunch before we board the “Expreso del Sur” to Uyuni in the afternoon. At our arrival in Uyuni, transfer to the Hotel where we stay overnight.

Day 7 Wednesday June 17: (B-L-D)

In Colchani, we visit an artisanal salt processing plant and witness traditional salt extraction methods. At the Incahuasi Island in the middle of the world’s largest salt flat, you see terrific giant cactus. In Uyuni, we visit the famous railway cemetery of steam locomotives before we have dinner and go to the Airport for our evening flight to La Paz. Transfer-in from the Airport to our Hotel where we stay overnight.

Day 8 Thursday June 18: (B-L)

We travel on a autoferro railcar from Viacha to Charaña at the Chilean border on the Arica – La Paz Railroad. Enjoy the incredible scenery during this trip. We return to La Paz in a private vehicle. Overnight we stay in La Paz.

 

Day 9 Friday June 19: (B-L)

We explore La Paz during a full- day city tour. We visit the old part of town and drive up to the Killi Killi viewpoint, from where you have breathtaking views of the city. We visit the old railway station in La Paz, which is now a cultural center. After lunch, we travel on cable-cars from La Paz to El Alto. We spend the night at our Hotel in La Paz.

Day 10 Saturday June 20: (B)

You have a free day in La Paz.

 

Day 11 Sunday June 21: (B-L)

We leave La Paz visiting in the morning Tiwanaku, one of the most famous Archeological Sites of the Aymara culture in Bolivia. We have lunch on the shores of Lake Titicaca before we cross the border to Peru and drive to Puno where we stay overnight.

 

Day 12 Monday June 22: (B-L)

Early morning, we head to the Puno Railway station and board the “Perurail Titicaca Train” that brings us to Cusco. This fascinating train journey goes through a fantastic high Andean scenery. The train travels the 242 Miles to Cusco in about 11 hours. In La Raya, the train reaches its highest point at 15, 177 ft above sea level. The downhill train ride to Cusco goes through endless pastures and calls at remote villages, reaching Cusco in the evening. We stay overnight in Cusco.

Day 13 Tuesday June 23: (B)

We do a city tour of Cusco in the morning. One of the highlights is the Santo Domingo Convent, which the Spaniards built over an ancient Inca Palace. Outside of Cusco, we visit the monumental Inca military fortress Sacsayhuaman. Later, we have a look at the Inca ruins of Qenko, Puca-Pucara, and Tambomachay. In the afternoon, you have free time. We stay overnight in Cusco.

 

Day 14 Wednesday June 24: (B-L-D)

We travel on the Incarail First Class Train from Cusco San Pedro Station to Aguas Calientes. We have lunch on the train. An expert guide will show us Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas. In the afternoon, we return to Aguas Caliente to board the Incarail First Class Train back to Cusco. We have dinner during the train journey. We stay overnight in Cusco.

Day 15 Thursday June 25: (B)

Transfer to the Airport and flight to Lima. In Lima, transfer-in to our Hotel in Miraflores. You have free time for the rest of the day.

 

Day 16 Friday June 26: (B-L)

We do a city tour in Lima and include a journey on the Metro train from Bayovar to Villa de Salvador. In the afternoon, we return to our hotel in Miraflores. 

 

Day 17 Saturday June 27: (B-L)

The train departs from Lima’s “Desamparados” railway station at 492 ft above sea level, climbing to an altitude of 15,686 ft and ending in Huancayo at 10,699 ft. The train passes through 69 tunnels and does six zigzags on its way to Huancayo. It is a unique and very scenic experience to travel on this train. Overnight we stay at the Hotel in Huancayo.

Day 18 Sunday June 28:

Enjoy a day at leisure in Huancayo. Should the “Tren Macho” from Huancayo – Huancavelica run, you can use this day to travel on this train at your cost. Because the train is very unreliable, we don’t include it in our itinerary.

 

Day 19 Monday June 29: (B-L)

You enjoy a day in the Mantaro Valley. In the morning, we visit the nearby Paca Lake and visit the Ocopa Monastery, where monks trained priests for jungle missions in the Amazon Rainforest during colonial times. We have a “Trout Lunch” in a local eatery. In the afternoon, we return to our Hotel. The rest of the day, you have free time. You spend the night at the Hotel in Huancayo.

 

Day 20 Tuesday June 30: (B-L)

We return by train back to Lima. We travel during daylight, the part where it was the night on Day 17. The downward journey is as spectacular as the upward trip. The train reaches the Desamparados railway station in Lima in the evening. We then transfer to our Hotel in Lima.

 

Day 21 Wednesday July 1: (B)

At the agreed time, transfer to the Airport and flight to your home country.
