JOURNEY BUENOS AIRES TO LIMA

This out-of-the-ordinary tour will take you from Buenos Aires, Argentina through Bolivia to Lima, Peru in a 21-day, once-in-a-lifetime adventure! We will take travelers from the iconic city of Buenos Aires to Tucuman, from where we visit the famous wine region of Cafayate. You then travel on the iconic “Tren a las Nubes” on the famous C-14 Line and continue the journey through the incredible landscape of the Uyuni Salt Flats to La Paz in Bolivia. We then continue into Peru to Lake Titicaca. From the lake we continue our trek north to Cusco onboard Peru Rail’s Titicaca Express. Finally we take the train to the wonder of the world known as Machu Picchu and beyond. This journey brings you to many of the region’s must-see sites, but you’ll also explore some tourist destinations that are frequently omitted from most other mainstream tours, including Cafayate, the Quebrada de Humahuaca, Uyuni and Lake Titicaca, among others.
Day 1 Sunday June 10 & October 7:
Welcome to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Our driver welcomes you at the Ezeiza International Airport and drives you to the four star Hotel Rochester Classic. For the rest of the day, you have free time to explore the city.
Day 2 Monday June 11 & October 8: (B-D)
Buenos Aires City Tour. Discover the most important neighborhoods and landmarks in Buenos Aires during a half-day city tour. Admire the Obelisk, the symbol of Buenos Aires, and the many open squares of colonial Spanish descent. The visit to La Boca neighborhood and a walk on the “Caminito Street” are other highlights of the tour. In the evening, we celebrate our welcome dinner at the Tango show of “El Querandi”. You’ll then spend a 2nd night at the Hotel Rochester Classic.

Day 3 Wednesday June 12 & October 9: (B-L)
We board a boat at Puerto Madero and head to Tigre. The cruise goes along the Costanera Navigation Canal, parallel to the Buenos Aires shoreline, passing the River Plate Stadium and the University of Buenos Aires. Then, we cruise through the canals of the delta, one of the largest in the world. We have lunch before heading to the Tigre train station, where we will take a train back to the city of Buenos Aires. 3rd night at the Hotel Rochester Classic

Day 4 Wednesday June 13 & October 10: (B-L-D)
Transfer to the airport in Buenos Aires for our flight to Tucuman in North Westerm Argentina. After a short panoramic city tour in Tucuman we continue our journey through the Calaqui Valley to Colalao del Valle before we reach Cafayate which famous for its wines. Near Cafayate, we check into the Hotel Casa de la Bodega where we stay overnight. Before dinner, we do a wine tasting.
Day 5 Thursday June 14 & October 11: (B-L)
We leave Cafayate by motorcoach in the morning headed north following the Rio Las Conchas towards Salta. Afternoon check-in at the Hotel Salta.
Day 6 Friday June 15 & October 12: (B-L)
We will visit the main attractions of Salta. We visit the Plaza 9 de Julio, the Cathedral, the Cabildo, the Casa de Uriburu, the Convent of San Francisco, the Convent and the Cerro San Bernardo, the monument to Guemes and Quebrada de San Lorenzo plus the handicraft market. 2nd night in Salta.
Day 7 Saturday June 16 & October 13: (B-L-D)
Departure with our motorcoach from Salta to the small village of Alfarcito at the foot of the Northern Argentine Andies. We then continue our journey through the Quebrada de las Cuevas to San Antonio de Cobres high in the Andies. In San Antonio de Cobres, we board the famous Train to the Clouds called “Tren al las Nudes” by the Argentine people. This is the highest excursion train operating in all of Argentina. We will travel to the Polvorilla Viaduct. The journey takes an hour to the viaduct, at 4,200 meters (13’780 ft) above sea level. The train stops for 30 minutes at the viaduct so that you have time to take pictures and do some souvenir shopping. We then ride the train back to San Antonio de Cobres then have lunch. After lunch we return down the mountain to Salta by highway. 3rd night at the Hotel Salta.
Day 8 Sunday June 17 & October 14: (B-L-D)
We say bye to Salta and head north by motorcoach to the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO listed valley. The valley is characterized by steep rock faces that change colors constantly depending on the hour of the day and from where you view them. Authentic dusty indigenous villages are spread along the route north. We stay overnight in Humahuaca at the Hotel Huacalera.

Day 9 Monday June 18 & October 15: (B-L-D)
Early morning we continue north so that we reach the Bolivian border before midday. If time permits, we do a short tour of Villazon before we board the “Wara Wara Express” for the train ride to Uyuni. The train reaches Uyuni early morning. A local guide welcomes us at the railway station and brings us to the Hotel Palacio de Sal in Colchani, where we spend the rest of the night. (B/L /D)

Day 10 Tuesday June 19 & October 16: (B-L-D)
We visit the train cemetery just outside of Uyuni where we explore various oxidized steam engines and wagons on this spectacular site surrounded by amazingly unique scenery. In Colchani, we visit an artisanal salt processing plant and witness traditional salt extraction methods. At the Incahuasi Island (known as Fisher Island) in the middle of the world’s largest salt flat, you see amazing giant cactus. Lunch will be served in the middle of the salt flat. 2nd overnight at the Hotel Palacio de Sal.

Day 11 Wednesday June 20 & October 17: (B-L-D)
In the morning we visit and watch salt excavation. We then go to a viewpoint above Coquesa Village from where you have fantastic views over the salt flat. Lunch is a Picnic on the central square in Coquesa. We drive over the salt flat to the Uyuni Airport, then take the evening flight to La Paz. In La Paz we stay at the Hotel Europa.

Day 12 Thursday June 21 & October 18: (B-L)
Today we take you on a city tour of La Paz which is a fascinating city. Discover the indigenous Cosmo-vision and their mystical rituals at the Witches Market. The San Francisco Church, the historical district around the main square and the “Plaza Murillo” with the Legislative and the Government Palace are other sights of interest that we visit. Enjoy breathtaking views of La Paz from the Killi Killi viewpoint. We’ll return to our hotel in the afternoon.

You have a free day in La Paz to relax and explore the city on your own.

Day 14 Saturday June 23 & October 20: (B-L-D)
This morning we travel on the Pan American Highway north out of La Paz Copacabana, a small town on the Bolivian side of the Lake Titicaca. Stroll through Copacabana’s handicraft stalls and food markets. In the afternoon, we cross the border to Peru. We reach Puno in the evening and stay at the Hotel Jose Antonio overnight.
Day 15 Sunday June 24 & October 21: (B-L-D)
Today we will take you on a cruise on Lake Titicaca which is the highest navigable lake in the world at 12,507 feet. The first stop is at the Floating Islands of Uros, where we visit an Aymara community who introduce us to their traditions. Then the cruise continues to Taquile Island. On this mountainous island, we have a typical lunch before the cruise returns to Puno. 2nd night at the Hotel Jose Antonio near Puno.

Day 16 Monday June 25 & October 22: (B-L-D)
This morning we go to the train station at Puno and board the “Perurail Titicaca Train” for the 211 mile journey north to Cusco. This fascinating journey goes through a scenic high Andean countryside. In La Raya, the train reaches its highest point at 15,177 feet. The downhill train ride to Cusco goes through endless pastures and calls at remote villages, reaching Cusco in the evening. The driver awaits us at the railway station and brings us to the Hotel José Antonio in Cusco where we stay overnight.
The PeruRail Titicaca train features an open-air observatory car, allowing you to take in the majestic views while enjoying the typical music and dances of the Peruvian highlands. During your trip, you will have the chance to take panoramic pictures of some of the quintessential Andean landscapes. The route is considered by many travel magazines to be one of the most beautiful in the world, with a trip that lasts ten and a half hours. At the start of the journey, passengers are welcomed where local musicians will provide background music as you board the train. Once aboard, you can enjoy the two dining cars decorated in the style of the Pullman cars of the 1920s. Also, during the trip, you will have the finest in gourmet food.

Day 17 Tuesday June 26 & October 23: (B-L)
Cusco city tour in the morning. One of the highlights is the Santo Domingo Convent, which is built over an ancient Inca Palace. Outside of Cusco, we visit the Inca military fortress Sacsayhuaman. Later, we have a look at the Inca ruins of Qenko, Puca-Pucara and Tambomachay. 2nd overnight in Cusco.

Day 18 Wednesday June 27 & October 24: (B-L)
“Awana Kancha” is your first stop on your way to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Observe the typical Andean animals “Guanacos“, “Llamas” “Alpacas” and “Vicuñas”. At the colorful market in Pisac, you can buy souvenirs for friends and family at home. You have lunch in a local restaurant. Characterized by narrow streets and street canals, Ollantaytambo is the oldest continuously occupied settlement in the Americas. In the late afternoon, you board the Explorer Train and travel to Machu Picchu where we check-in to the Hotel Casa Andina.

Day 19 Thursday June 28 & October 25: (B-L)
With an expert guide we explore Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas. Take your time to explore Machu Picchu at your own leisure after the guided tour. You eat lunch at the Sanctuary Lodge. We then return to Ollantaytambo with the train in the afternoon and continue the journey by bus to Cusco. Overnight, we stay at the Hotel José Antonio in Cusco.
Day 20 Friday June 29 & October 26: (B-L)
We transfer to the airport in Cusco to board the flight to Lima, then transfer to the Hotel Sonesta Posada del Inca in Lima’s Miraflores district. Enjoy an interesting city tour of Lima’s colonial past. Discover the Plaza San Martin and the Plaza Mayor with the Government Palace, the Archbishop’s Palace and the Cathedral. We drive through the modern district of San Isidro and Miraflores on our way back to the hotel. During the city tour we invite you to our farewell lunch at the Larco Museum. You’ll spend the night at the Hotel San Augustin Exclusive. (B/L)

Morning at leisure. At the agreed time, our guide transfers you to the international airport in time to board the flight back to your home country.
